Understanding Computer Terminology

 1) RAM

RAM or (Random Access Memory) is an important computer part that determines your system’s performance. It provides a temporary place to access all your data and application. It’s like a scratchpad that stores the information that your computer is actively using.

But with today’s different web browsers and complex applications, computers need a better RAM that with the capacity to handle multiple open apps at the same time. Sytems with a poor-performing RAM also delivers a slow and sluggish output.

You need at least 4GB RAM to perform common needs like browsing the internet, loading applications, creating and editing documents, or storing the latest game for you. It’s the Memory that works to switch between these tasks. Therefore, the more memory you have, the better experience you are getting.

There are differences when it comes to standard computer memory. This is why manufacturers are working on industry-wide standardization in memory to determine the electrical parameters of the memory that can be installed in their computers.

Check a computer’s RAM if you want to get a computer with more memory. This also helps you see if the unit is compatible with the other components in your system.

2) Processor

This is your computer’s central processing unit or CPU. It’s the hardware that interprets and executes instructions of a computer program. This part allows your computer to interact with different applications it is using.

Fast computer processors associate with high performance. With fast-changing technology and increased productivity goals, a computer needs a fast processor to keep up with every user’s multi-tasking requests.

Modern processors are getting more powerful, fast, and efficient, but with different models showcasing different features and specs, determining your needs will help you choose which is for you.

Choose quad-core processors or higher. Today’s entry-level Core i3 is the most affordable but the least powerful processor compared to the mid-range Core i5 that comes with ample speed for power usage and heavy multitasking. This is great for browsing, document editing, and entertainment. There is also the Core i7 and i9 chips which are more expensive being the absolute best computer you can buy.

3) Storage

Computers need a place to house files and data. The purpose is so that so you don’t have to keep reloading and re-entering everything each time you use the computer. That’s what storage is for in addition to RAM.

We talked about memory (above) as the location for short-term data, now storage is the section that stores data on a long-term basis. Typically, it comes in the form of a storage house, a solid-state drive, or a hard drive. Drives come in different memory storage capacity to offer a lot of space for storing applications, documents, and all the other stuff you want to save.

Get yourself familiar with HDD (Hard Disk Drive) for common file storage, and SSD (Solid State Drive), which is faster than HDD. The hard disk drive is the built-in storage of laptops and is typically enough for basic activities. However, if you need a faster loading and booting capacity, choose the SSD.

Because storage in general holds the operating system and files, you need a feature with the capacity to write information and read it right from the storage system.

4)  Screen Size

Screen size is the physical measurement of your computer screen. Typically, they are measured in inches so you will see 10”, 13”, 17”, etc. Variations in screen size typically do not impact the information that is displayed on the screen. The details are intact except that this same information appears smaller (on a smaller monitor) or larger (on a larger monitor).

This is the reason why computers are classified by their sizes where their processing abilities are determined by their dimensions. Larger models like supercomputers, for instance, have the most powerful processing speed and accuracy compared to personal computers.

5) Resolution

Different sizes of computer screens create different resolutions, as well. Higher resolutions contain more pixels per inch (PPI) that create a high-quality, crisp image. Lower resolutions have fewer pixels so they create low-pixel images. If these images are stretched, they can be blurry.

The importance of resolution lies in the fact that it gives a big difference in the quality of both the size of text on the screen and the authenticity of the information it displays. For instance, a 10-point font in a 1024 x 768 resolution takes a smaller appearance than that same point size in a 640 x 480 resolution. This is because the pixels display in a 1024 x 768 is smaller. A higher resolution also delivers more words per line and more lines per screen than that of a lower resolution.

Since computers utilize millions of pixels to create images, the one thing to consider is a model that tells you how many pixels your screen can display horizontally and vertically. For designers, the resolution of different screens can affect how they build different apps.

6) Operating system

Your first question should be is what will the computer be used for? Business, games, or teaching online?

While Windows is well-known for business and personal usage for its ease of use – Linux will likely be ideal if you’re into programming, and a Mac OS if you’re a graphic designer or music producer; as this operating system is suitable for graphics and multi-media use.

Most computers come with an OS already installed with Windows being the most compatible with the majority of software and programs. But again, you can access a library of Mac-specific software for a Mac Os, and a vast number of open-source alternatives to commercial software that are free to use if your choice is a Linux OS.

Are you sharing documents and files with a lot of other people? Then it may be advisable to go for a computer with the same operating system as everyone else so connecting to others will be a lot convenient.

Don’t forget to examine the security differences, editing, and programming tools. Different operating systems carry different packages when it comes to image and video, or audio settings. You may want to inquire about 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the operating system.

Get the newest edition at all costs. Imagine the number of features it offers even if you’re a little unfamiliar – you will learn and discover.

Tip:

Before considering a computer with Windows XP, seek first the best advice from a computer professional. XP may not provide security and technical support from Microsoft.
