13 Best Pencils For Teachers 2022

The Pencil is defined by most dictionaries to be a long and thin object made out of wood equipped with a lead that is mainly used for writing purposes. But aside from that, I believe that the pencil is the greatest learning instrument to have ever been invented and that is why today, we’re going over some of the best pencils for teachers.

Something as humble as the pencil has long been the painted image for learning. It has also paved the way for us to further education, technology, and society pushing it to thrive and prosper guiding it to become what it is today.

a close up picture of a pencil tip

The pencil is the greatest learning instrument to have ever been invented because a pencil lets us make mistakes rather than pens leaving a long-lasting mark that will not fade sooner or later.

And mistakes are the most important part of the learning process and it is undeniably a part of how everything has come to be around us as well as all of the collective accomplishment humanity has come to achieve.

Even the greatest minds to have ever existed used pencils to put down some of the greatest ideas that have revolutionized human history, making everything into what it is today.

Although pencils are more regarded to be associated with children and less likely with adults, we’re going to talk about how pencils are still superior to their long-term rival which is the pen. And why it would be a good choice for teachers to still practice using pencils for their writing activities.

5 Reasons Why You Should Use A Pencil

1.) Pencils are far more efficient than pens or any digital pens

If you’re looking for an efficient writing tool, should you reach out to a pencil or a pen? Before you reach out to your pen, let me tell you something about pencils and hold on to your seat for a little while before you grab that pen.

Pencils can do a better and more efficient job compared to pens or digital pens because of the following reasons; there are more uses for pencils than for pens because there are actually 12 types of pencils that can be used from golfing up to carpentry and whatever it is that your heart desires to put in writing.

It’s not just for writing, pencils are also widely used by professional artists for art purposes especially colored pencils and charcoal pencils.

Pencils are far more efficient because they require no battery or any preparation prior to use except for sharpening. There’s also no need for any cellular signal for it to operate, all you need is your pen, paper, and the occasional use of a sharpener and you’re good to go.

They are always ready to write and will be always waiting for you to pick it up and accompany you with pouring out all the ideas that you want to materialize on paper.

2.) Pencils are eco-friendly

Another advantage of using a pencil is that they are far more eco-friendly compared to pens that are usually made from plastic material which takes almost a thousand years before it has barely decomposed within our life-giving ecosystem.

Just think about all the previous pencils that you’ve used that have surely contributed to landfills today. With pencils, you’ll be able to reduce your carbon footprint and have helped divert supposed landfills.

3.) Pencils have erasers

If you were to make a mistake with pencils you’ll have 3 options to remedy it.

One, you’ll just let it be and go on with your writing leaving a notable mistake that can be quite bothering for some.

Two, you’ll use a correction tape or fluid that can sometimes leave a gunky feel on your paper and it can even worsen the situation at times.

And three, you scribble on it like a madman trying to hide whatever mistake it is that was done, and that won’t really good on your writing material afterward as well.

But with pencils, you’ll have a different story. You have the option to re-write, the option to correct your mistake and rectify whatever it is that you want to set right. And the best part is, almost all of them have built-in erasers!

4.) Pencils don’t leak and you can accurately see how much is left

Another well-known fact about pencils is that they don’t leak and you can accurately see how much ammo you have left when writing, because if you’re in the middle of writing down something important you surely don’t want your writing instrument failing on you especially during the spur of the moment.

Unlike pens that can sometimes have an unreliable window to show you how much ink is left, you’ll know how much there is left with your pencil at a glance. And also, they don’t leak! You’ll never have a problem with accidental ink explosions with pencils while they’re in your shirt’s pocket or your pants pocket.

5.) Pencils can write at any angle

Have you ever been in a situation where you’re using a pen and you need to write down something important but you have no place to sit and put the paper down comfortably and the only option is for you to write by a wall or while you’re standing up but then your pen suddenly decides not to write because of gravity?

This can be cumbersome, but not with a pencil. Pencils can write in any angle, up, down, sideways, in any way, it’s always ready to write that even in space pencil is the preferred writing instrument because pens do not work up there!

Now that you know the superiority of the pencil over a pen, let’s head on to our quick buying guide to know which pencil is right for you.

Pencil 101: A Quick Buying Guide

When it comes to choosing the right pencil for a teacher’s writing ventures there is quite a lot to choose from, some would be great for artistic purposes, while some would work wonders for writing activities in which most teachers are always engaged in.

In spite of that, it will always still come down to a person’s personal preferences, but there are ways to know which ones are the best of the best. And today we’re going to talk about how you’ll be able to do it.

Types of Pencils

Like what I have mentioned earlier, there are 12 types of pencils but 5 of them are the most popular (marked with an asterisk) and are mainly used for general writing and artistic activities, and they are the following:

*Graphite Pencils – This would be the standard pencil that we see every day in school, it is made from a mix of clay and graphite material to produce the writing element of this pencil which is encased using durable wooden material.

There are graphite levels for this kind of pencil and it is to help determine the level of darkness a graphite pencil has and is used for a wide variety of purposes, as seen here

Solid Graphite Pencils – This type of pencil is just the same as the Graphite pencil minus the wooden case itself, so all you get is the graphite core only. They are mostly used for drawing and artistic purposes mainly to cover larger areas by using the technique of shading.

Charcoal pencils – charcoal pencils are much like black sticks made from charcoal that is mainly used for art purposes as well and come in three different shades, which are black, white, and sepia tone.

Carbon Pencils – Carbon pencils are a mixture of both graphite and charcoal material to produce a writing instrument that is smoother than a charcoal pencil and is darker than graphite pencils.

*Colored Pencils – And of course, colored pencils which have been increasingly popular nowadays because of the trending rate of adult coloring books, usually come as wax-based and oil-based which have their own pros and cons.

Watercolor pencils are also under this category, they’re just like colored pencils but with a hint of water using a brush, they turn into a watercolor-like effect on paper.

Grease Pencils – this is a special type of pencil that is usually wax-based and is encased using a paper casing, what makes the grease pencil special is that it can write on any type of surface without leaving any mark or scratch on the material you use it to write on. They are mostly used on glossy and nonporous surfaces much like porcelain or glass.

*Carpenter’s Pencils – Mostly used for construction purposes, the carpenter’s pencil is specially designed to have an oval-shaped barrel for it not to roll-off from where it’s placed easily.

Its graphite core also leaves a distinct, bold, and clear marking so that when used you’ll be able to see the marking very easily. It’s also one of the most durable types of pencil as it won’t easily break even if it falls from such height that would cause normal pencils to break.

Copying Pencils – Also known as indelible pencils first introduced in the 19th century

Popularized for its transferability to another paper with the aid of water, it’s like how a copying machine works today.

You write it down like a normal pencil and it works like a normal pencil would and just add water and it can be then transferred to another writing surface of your choice but most preferably paper.

Non-photo blue pencils – Also known as the non-reproducing pencil, this type of pencil is known for its unique feature which is its ability to not be copied by photo-copying machines.

They are mostly used for sketches that will then be scanned with only the grayscale left without the blue from the pencil.

*Golf pencils – known for their short and stout appearance golf pencils are used for score-keeping purposes for the sport Golf, hence the name. But aside from that they are also highly recommended for young learners especially when they are just starting to learn how to write letters and numbers.

Children can grab on to them easily while efficiently letting them learn how to write with ease compared to using a normal size pencil which can be awfully long for small hands.

Golf pencils are also the most used pencils for occasions where they will only be used for a short period of time, like wedding events, libraries, restaurants, and for events where they are best used for a brief amount of time only.

*Mechanical Pencils – One of the most popular pencil types, this type of pencil is equipped with a mechanism to help push the lead out to the point of its barrel serving as the tip of this pencil.

There are different diameters and darkness when choosing leads for this type of pencil, and they are mostly used for writing and technical drawings done by architects and engineers.

Mechanical pencils are your best bet if you don’t want to constantly sharpen a pencil and you want the convenience of a pen because all you need to do is click and it will then push out a sharp and new lead.

Stenographer’s Pencil – This pencil is equipped with a break-proof lead that allows its user a very smooth, soft, and light writing experience. It also guarantees a long usage because of how reliable its lead is that you don’t have to sharpen it frequently even if you use it for a long writing session.

They are also a bit expensive in terms of price, but their performance and features are definitely worth their price tag.

Barrel Quality

Now that you know all about the different types of pencil that you can choose from, the next thing for you to check on is the pencil’s barrel quality, assuming that you’re going for a wooden pencil then you should look into a high-quality wood encasing that does not easily chip off when you sharpen it.

Low-quality and cheap pencils tend to sharpen poorly when good sharpening is due, and that can be a bit bothersome, especially when you need to give it a quick sharpening every now and then.

You won’t usually see the type of wood brands and products are using since they are not usually advertised but the superior choice of wood quality would be incense cedar which is the top tier when it comes to pencil wood.

Incense-cedar sharpens evenly and does not produce splinters which are usually encountered with low-quality pencils.

After incense cedar, the next quality wood to look for is the Basswood, White Fir, and Poplar. They are mostly seen on budget-friendly pencils that can produce only a small amount of splinters but are still manageable.

Please keep in mind to avoid tropical and pitted woods that have small holes or pits within the wood of the pencil, these are woods that are harvested in an unsustainable way and will likely be poorly and unevenly sharpened when used with a sharpener no matter how hard you try.

The same goes for plastic pencils, they also do poorly when being sharpened, and also the fact that the plastic is non-biodegradable already says a lot about it.

Graphite/Lead Grade

Contrary to popular belief there is actually no lead in pencil even though the writing element in the pencil has always been called a lead. A pencil lead can be graded based on its hardness or softness as well as for its darkness and lightness.

There are two main ways to measure a pencil’s darkness and hardness known as the HB Scale and the Numerical Scale.

The HB Scale, which is used almost by all in different parts of the world, measures a pencil’s graphite core using three letters (H, B, and F) where “H” means hard, these pencils produce a thin and lighter line. And “B” means Bolder and Blacker, and pencils with this grade produce darker and thicker lines

And “F” means fine, and F graded pencils are usually stenographer’s pencils which are only one of their kind and they stay sharper longer compared to H and B pencils.

Measured pencils under the H and B levels are also accompanied by a number between 2-9 which indicates the blackness in the case of B and hardness in the case of H. The higher the number is the bolder and harder the pencil will also be.

And for the Numerical Scale, which is popularly used in the U.S. and is the most simple out of the two scales, the higher the number is the harder and lighter the writing will be on paper, and the most recommended paper known as the standard pencil is the #2 pencil.

Barrel Shape and Size

Considering a pencil’s barrel shape and size is also a must, you will see some come in thin and slender sizes, while some in classic pencil size, and there are also other brands who also offer pencils in jumbo size.

Now for the shapes, there are four main shapes to choose from. The first one is the Hexagonal shape is mostly seen in mainstream pencils and premium ones too, and this is because of the comfort it provides great for general activities such as writing and drawing as well.

The second is the round shape, also most commonly seen in pencils that you can buy from supply stores. They are highly recommended for young learners since they can be grabbed on to easily because it’s shape has no contours. The most round shape pencils you will see are gold pencils, graphite pencils, and colored pencils as well.

The third shape which is quite rare is the triangular shape. They give the same ergonomic effect as the hexagonal shaped pencils but it is quite hard to find as only a few brands produce their pencils in this shape.

And last but not least are the oval pencils, which are also called flat pencils and are usually only seen with carpenter pencils, the design is specifically thought of for the pencil not to roll especially when marking woodworks.

Erasers and Ergonomics

These would be optional factors to consider, but of course, when purchasing a pencil an eraser should be an automatic inclusion since it’s the main selling point of why we are considering pencils—because of the erasers.

If you are not satisfied with the eraser that the pencil comes with, you can always purchase a separate and more efficient one depending on your personal preferences.

And if you are someone who suffers from the occasional hand cramps caused by long writing sessions, then it’s best for you to opt for a pencil with ergonomic features with padded grips or try out separate pencil grips that you can encase your pencil with.

Pencil grips are usually made from rubber or foam and their job is to let your hands rest and feel comfortable while writing because it will expand the shaft where your hand is usually placed while you write, therefore you’ll write with much more ease with them.

Price

Of course, when buying any item, you should always consider the price. Some pencils can have expensive price tags and some for less than a dollar or so. The price will really depend on the quality of the pencil you are purchasing.

But still, it’s best to go for the quality ones because pencils are also a form of investment, and you’ll be the one using them so you’ll surely want only the best. And so without further ado, let’s head on to our best pencils for teachers list!

4.) Pentel GraphGear 1000 Mechanical Pencil

This pencil might not need an introduction anymore because Pentel is indeed a well-known brand to make some of the best and quality writing instruments from markers to pens and now pencils.

I’ve always loved this brand, and so do a lot of people too, given that it has over 13,150 positive ratings and that already has a lot to say about this brilliant mechanical pencil.

The Pentel GraphGear 1000 is a premium choice drafting pencil that is great for all types of activities specifically designed for drafting, artwork, education, and the general purpose of writing as well.

And the reason why I included this mechanical pencil in this list is that this pencil has proven to be superior when it comes to the main writing element which is its lead. Its lead is Pentel’s Super Hi-Polymer HB lead that never needs sharpening and is super strong making it resistant to breaking and produces a clear bold line as well every time you use it.

But that’s not the only thing that the Pentel GraphGear 1000 has up its sleeves, it also features a retractable mechanism which is one of a kind and is a technology developed by Pentel. Its dual-action retraction sleeve is responsible for the advances and retraction movements of the sleeve which then protects the leads from breaking.

Operating it is also very cool, you’ll have to move the clip and click the end of the pencil to retract and advance the lead sleeve, kind of like how you would normally do with a pen. But the clip is indeed a different story. You can check out why by clicking the image of the Pentel GraphGear 1000 on the side.

It comes in 4 different sizes and you can choose from 0.3 mm, 0.5mm, 0.7mm, and 0.9mm. If you’re planning to get them all, you won’t have to worry about mixing them up because they are also color-coded so that you’ll know the lead size of each pen.

It also has a lead hardness indicator which is also very useful to let you know and remind you which type of lead it is that you loaded into it. It can also hold a ton of leads which then saves you time from reloading every time you need a new lead.

There’s more to discover with the Pentel GraphGear 1000 and I’ll leave the other discoveries to you, so go ahead and grab yourself one!

Its unique thicker core and softer point as well provide smoother and darker lines all while exerting less pressure, and that can only mean less to no more hand cramps!

These pencils display a unique style as the barrel is triangular in shape which helps prevent it from rolling off and has a natural wood that is a bit pinkish in the color finish on three sides and a smooth black paint finish on the other three giving it a kind of stripe vibe that is uncommon but is also actually cool as well.

Along its semi-painted body, you’ll also get to see the gold imprint showing the name of the pencil as well as the name brand living the pencil with quite a good impression. The Bear Claw pencil has a black ferrule with a pop of teal for its chunky eraser which also erases quite well, as most users say and it’s actually round even if the body of the pencil itself is triangular.

The Bear Claw pencil is made from 100% high-quality redwood which is eco-friendly and stylish at the same time, giving it a sturdy and durable feel when used for writing.

If you’re looking for an unbreakable core that you’ll need to sharpen less compared to other pencils, this is the set that you need to get. The thick and chubby core will demonstrate strength and resistance to breakage even if it accidentally falls from a certain height.

7.) Palomino Blackwing 602

Palomino Blackwing 602

Considered to be the superior choice when it comes to pencils and gracing our list with its existence is the Palomino Blackwing 602 Pencil all the way from the country that produces some of the finest writing instruments in the world, Japan.

When it comes to the price range I must admit that they are indeed expensive, but I promise you that investing in this pencil is worth it especially for your writing affairs and I’m going to tell you why a teacher should have this pencil in their writing arsenal.

The Palomino Blackwing 602 Pencil is made from high-quality and sustainably sourced incense-cedar wood which I have mentioned to be the best option for pencils to use as a barrel and that’s only one of the reasons that make these pencils premium.

After the barrel quality, you have to appreciate its sleek and flawless body paint finish along with the pristine and quality gold imprint showing off the name and brand of the pencil, which is “Palomino Blackwing” giving it a classy look.

Also, when it comes to using pencils we all know how cumbersome it is when the eraser gets used up and you can’t really use it properly anymore because the eraser is already all the way up inside the ferrule.

Some people might resort to crimping the ferrule by biting it or forcing it with pliers so that the eraser will come out but you don’t have to worry about that because of the thoughtful eraser design that the Palomino Blackwing 602 Original Soft Pencil has.

This pencil has a unique gold ferrule that holds a removable eraser because it’s equipped with a metal clip holder letting you pull it out and adjust it when the eraser gets worn out just by simply extending it outwards, giving you an all-new eraser to use for clean and quick corrections.

You also get a ton of eraser volume as it goes all the way inside the ferrule giving you enough erasures to last until your last line unless you use it quite a lot.

Another thing to take note of about the Palomino Blackwing 602 Pencil is its brilliant ferrule design because even if you use the pencil all the way up to the end, you will still be able to hold it comfortably letting you write and use it till your last line. It acts as a pencil extender without having to buy a separate one. So you get more erasers and more use of the actual pencil itself as well.

Now for the main article of this pencil which is the Japanese graphite core that can be compared to 2B is firm graphite that is ideal for writing because it does not lose its sharp point easily. It’s smoother compared to other writing pencils making it very ideal for teachers.

Sharpen less and write more smoothly with the Palomino Blackwing 602 Pencil bringing pleasure in writing with nothing more and nothing less.

8.) Mitsubishi 9850 HB Pencil

Mitsubishi 9850 HB Pencil

Another one of the greats is the Mitsubishi 9850 HB Pencil because aside from their great cars Mitsubishi also has some of the best pencils any pencil aficionados can appreciate.

This pencil is also one of the few pencils from Mitsubishi to have an eraser because most of their pencil products do not come with erasers and that is also the reason why I chose this one because teachers need the convenience and a pencil with a built-in eraser is a must.

The Mitsubishi 9850 HB Pencil is manufactured to perfection and is considered to be one of the most affordable quality pencils based on its performance and overall built as well. This pencil does not come pre-sharpened but this will give you a chance to see how centered the graphite is which is important for the overall performance of the pencil.

Because if a pencil has off-centered graphite it has the tendency to sway your writing in a different direction from where you are leading the pencil to, and that can be bothersome especially when writing down plenty of notes for lesson plans, minutes of the meeting, and other important matters that teachers need to write down.

This pencil also comes in a beautiful maroon color that resembles the color of the iconic Mitsubishi logo, making this pencil look premium and distinctive as well.

Along the barrel of the Mitsubishi 9850 HB Pencil, you also get to see the silver imprint showing the details and brand name of the pencil itself and a few writings on other sides of the pencil that says “Smooth Writing for office use” but it can be used for a variety of purposes, and the graphite grade as well in a silver imprint that says HB.

It’s also equipped with a brassy gunmetal ferrule which fits the pencil beautifully and topping it all off is a white eraser that can erase cleanly and quickly as well.

The wood used for this pencil is not determined by the manufacturer but it does well on most standard sharpeners whether it’s a manual or an electric one. There are also no splinters produced when sharpening this pencil so I think they’re made from cedar wood also because of the reddish color of the wood in this pencil.

The Mitsubishi 9850 HB Pencil will be your next favorite everyday pencil so grab yourself a pack and experience it for yourself to find out why!

Now, if the capped design feature piqued your interest, you’ll definitely love how it serves its purpose. The cap design is one of a kind in the USA and is intended to protect the pencil tip when not in use, which is very unique compared to other types of mechanical pencils where you’ll have to push pack in the lead so that it will not break once you store it.

And not only that, but it also provides proper balance when writing making it very lovely and easy to handle. It is also quite handy especially when you are someone who wants to keep their pen or pencil ready at all times in their pocket.

A cleverly integrated button in the cap will also let you extend the lead just like how you would do with other mechanical pencils. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1.) Can you still use a pencil if they accidentally get wet?

Technically you can still use a pencil that accidentally got wet as long as the pencil itself was not soaked through with water for a long period of time, let’s say maybe three days or more. You just need to let them air dry under the sun for a day or two and just give them a good sharpening before you use them again.

This would also depend on the quality of the pencil, if you’re using a low-quality pencil that surely uses poor quality wood then you’ll need to check the wood quality after it has dried, low-quality pencils will have a tendency to chip off depending on how long it got wet and how well it was dried.

Some pencils are designed to be of use even in wet environments, just make sure that you store them properly the way manufacturers have advised and you should be all good to go!

2.) What’s the best way to care for pencils and how to store them?

Did you know that a pencil can write up to 45,000 words, and that’s a lot! And to maximize that, you need to take care of your pencil so that you’ll be able to write until the last line.

Pencils are not high-maintenance, so don’t worry about that. All you need to know is just the basics of how to store them properly and how to take care of them and you’ll be writing with it until you can no longer hold it anymore when you write with it.

Pencils are best kept in a pencil case or in any storage option of your choice as long as they are kept from foreign objects or dirt that can affect their writing ability. Keeping them safe and secure in the likes of a pencil case will keep them from breaking and being lost as well.

Pencil cases are your best friends, alternatively, you can try keeping them in a desktop organizer on top of your work desk too!

And there’s no problem if you want to store them upright, downright, or just let it chill horizontally, they will still work either way. Unlike pens that might need to be stored downright and away from certain temperatures as well.

3.) What are other uses for pencils aside from writing?
