Fortunately, promoting diversity and inclusion in the classroom isn’t rocket science. It only requires a little bit of knowledge, a decision, and some action.

How Can You Manage Diversity in the Classroom?

This has been very challenging for us but we can still achieve our goals. You’ve just come to the right place. I will share with you smart tips on how you can manage diversity in your classroom to provide students with varied choices to learn. Our students love choices and they learn best when our activities in the classroom are inclusive.

1. Get to know your students

Always make an effort to get to know your students. It should be manifested from the very beginning. You may conduct a diagnostic examination so you’ll know where they are.

What is their origin? Are you aware of their standard of living? Perhaps it’s quite helpful to require students to include their background information upon filling out enrollment forms.

The more you know your students, the better prepared you are to provide a safe and secure learning environment in which they can succeed.

You can also conduct a Parent-Teacher conference at the beginning of the school year so you can work with them in knowing your best with your students. Through this, you can learn more about your students and you can also promote diversity in school with the parents.

2. Be willing to apply differentiated instruction

Provide your students with choices. This requires you to design varied learning activities that highly signify your students’ learning styles.

As always, creating a diverse classroom atmosphere is easier said than done. You can make it your priority but then honestly, with my years in the teaching profession, addressing the individual needs of our students is hard and I find it challenging to move the needle.

Nonetheless, if your passion is teaching then you are very willing to do everything for student engagement, for increasing student performance, and for developing life skills. Isn’t it?
