What is a safety classroom? 5 Practical Preemptive Measures You Need to Observe
1. Safety rules and procedures are established
What rules should rule in the classroom? As your students are involved in daily routines, you have to make sure that they are safe by letting them follow safety rules and procedures.
Therefore, safety rules should be established right from the beginning. The presence of safety rules in the classroom will foster a positive and safe learning environment. It should definitely cover more than the physical aspect, but should also delve into the emotional and psychological aspects of the child.
Classroom safety rules should be adhered to. Hence, students should be aware of them. They should know specifically that bullying, for example, is not allowed in the classroom. Or you should supervise them when they are using classroom equipment.
In developing safety rules in the classroom it’s highly recommended to involve the students. They will understand and appreciate the safety rules better. On my end, I require my students to make slogans and posters out of the safety procedures being established and I display their work on the class bulletin board.
2. Safety procedures and warning signs are made visible

To ensure that safety procedures are followed and remembered, they have to be visible. Creating posters and displaying them on the walls can help. Sometimes, charts of warning signs work wonderfully. However, we have to remember that less is more. Because of that, we should not over-decorate the classroom walls because it might cause confusion among the students.
For example, display posters on electrical safety and other safety posters should be on the walls. Hence, it’s imperative to outline safety procedures and warning signs clearly and with illustrations.
Moreover, warning signs have to be explained to children so they will be guided. Giving examples and modeling safety precautions can do great detail in encouraging students to follow safety procedures.
Safety in the classroom should be clearly emphasized and should be implemented consistently. To make sure that students always remember the importance of safety rules, they have to be reminded from time to time. It’s really helpful, especially for young children.
3. Students are always supervised
In a safe classroom, the teacher always supervises students especially when they use equipment or when they are having their hands-on exercises. There are items in the classroom that have potential hazards such as cabinets, shelves, and classroom supplies.
Furthermore, students should be taught how to use classroom equipment correctly. For example, when they are to use the projector for their presentation, they have to be guided accordingly. Classroom equipment such as laptops, computers, and other high-tech gadgets can do so much more if it is used appropriately.
4. Students have enough space to move about

The physical layout of the classroom should be well-thought of. The learning space should be free from distractions in particular. Small group discussion areas and other learning zones/ stations should be made clear of any form of hazards. In other words, the classroom should give enough safe space to students so they can collaborate and connect with their peers.
Seats should be arranged in a way that allows student interaction without violating safety rules and precautions. Hence, I highly recommend movable chairs rather than the attached desks. Doing this ensures that students are not only learning productively but are also staying in the classroom safe and sound.
As we set up the classroom to meet our students’ learning needs, we have to always consider what’s safe and comfortable. There might be desks, benches, desk organizers, and shelves that can cause untoward injuries if not arranged properly. Hence, before the opening of classes, we have to envision how to set up our classrooms safely. Moreover, the physical arrangement and the overall classroom layout should inspire student learning first and foremost.
5. A healthy and respectful learning environment has been created
Students should be aware that verbal teasing and name-calling are not allowed. Moreover, they should know that they need to raise a hand whenever they want to say something. The emphasis on respect is hereby called upon.
To offer a climate of safety in the classroom, students must know how to get along with their peers. We have to tap our best behavior management strategies for this one. Considering that each student has unique traits and abilities, they should be asked how they like to be treated in the first place.
Furthermore, treating students equally will boost their self-esteem and make them a lot more comfortable in the classroom. Maintaining a healthy and respectful learning environment takes work, but it’s a way of fostering a safe and positive classroom.
It’s a wrap-up.
Students perform effectively in safe and well-ventilated classrooms. Everything about the physical arrangement should spell out safety measures. However, we should not forget to take care of both the psychological and emotional aspects of the child.
Therefore, it’s vital to create a positive and productive learning environment. It’s a way towards the academic and emotional success of the students, especially the younger ones.
Promoting the emotional well-being of students is needed to foster a positive and safe learning environment. Hence, may I ask, what is a safe classroom? Write down your answers below and I’d love to read them all.
